Biographical or Historical Information
Class Annals, which included class history and prophesy, were handwritten between 1872 -1892. There is no class annals for 1891. The class of 1893 published the first yearbook. Yearbooks were again hand written in 1894 and 1895 until the class of 1896 again published a yearbook. From 1899 through 1904 each class published its own yearbook and classes of 1907 and 1909 also published yearbooks. A prank by a student or students in the class of 1910 ended class yearbooks for five years. College President, Thomas H. Lewis was the object of ridicule in an acrostic poem "Vale" in the 1910 Aloha and Dr. Lewis prohibited yearbooks. The class of 1916 petitioned and received permission to publish a yearbook. However it was not until 1922 that yearbooks were published for every class thereafter.
Except for 1913 and 1918, The Western Maryland College Monthly published a commencement issue which listed the events of commencement week, award winners, and often the Baccalaureate sermon and the valedictory. Some editions included pictures of the graduating class, sports teams, and college buildings.
The original title of the yearbook Aloha was named for a Hawaiian word used in a lecture given by College President, Thomas H. Lewis, after he returned from a trip around the world in 1892 -- "And one other word must be noticed for its exquisite beauty both of sound and sense, it is ALOHA. . . . It is a greeting and a farewell; it expresses the feeling of the heart whether that be the ordinary courtesy of hospitality or the tender sympathy of personal affection." Except for 1896, 1907, and 1909, Aloha titled Western Maryland College's yearbooks from 1899 through 1970. Beginning in 1971 the yearbook took on a series of titles: soft fire and eggshells, 1971; Traces, 1972; Mnemonic, 1973-1975 and 1980; Landslide, 1977; Mortar, Stones, and Memories, 1978; Passage, 1979; Looking Good, 1985; and A Memory or Two, 1987 which was produced by the College Activities Director who pulled together a collection of photographs. In 1976 the yearbook was titled Crossroads. This title was used again from 1981-1984, 1986, 1988, and 1989-1999. The title for the yearbook was changed to Pathways in 2000.
