Scope and Contents

The Jane Hutchison Papers contain photographs, correspondence, programs, yearbooks and other ephemera related to Hutchison's time as a student at Western Maryland College and her work as an alumnae. The collection spans the years 1951-2007, with the bulk in the years 1951-1954. The collection is arranged into three series by format: papers, photographs, and yearbooks. Papers are arranged by format with individual items arranged chronologically. Photographs are arranged by subject and then by size.

Biographical / Historical

Jane Campbell Hutchison was born July 20th, 1932 in Washington, D.C and grew up in District Heights, Md. In 1954 she graduated from Western Maryland College with a degree in art. Following her graduation from WMC, Hutchison obtained a Masters at Oberlin College and her doctorate in art history from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hutchison taught in the Department of Art History at University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1964 until her retirement in 2012. Her expertise was in Northern European Art of the 15th through 17th centuries. She published eight books during her career, most notably a biography of German painter, Albrecht Durer. After her retirement, Hutchison moved to Chevy Chase, Md. where she passed away on July 12, 2020.
