Biographical / Historical

The WMC Monthly was a student-produced periodical that ran from 1887 to 1926. Prior to the Monthly, the College Literary Societies produced separate publications that served as the campus’ source for news, events, and literature. The first was the Irving Literary Gazette, which began in 1868 and was shortly discontinued. The Gazette was resurrected in 1881; however, the other societies on campus (Webster, Browning, and Philomathean) were unhappy with the periodical and suggested that a publication be co-produced by all four organizations. When members of the Irving Society refused the merger, the three other groups produced their own publication, the Portfolio. These rival publications continued until October 1887 when the editors and faculty agreed to merge their efforts into a single publication, the WMC Monthly. Professor James Reese held the position of first editor-in-chief until October 1888 when the duties were transferred to the students. The Monthly ceased publication in October 1926 after the successful launch of the College newspaper, The Gold Bug.
