Scope and Contents
This collection contains scrapbooks, manuscripts, photographs, and ephemera documenting the history and activities of the Delta Sigma Kappa sorority at Western Maryland College. It spans the years 1926-1992 with most of the collection documenting the period between 1960-1986. The collection is arranged into four series based on format. The first series contains scrapbooks created by Delta Sigma Kappa and covers the years 1943-1986. Series two consists of manuscript collections and includes copies of the sorority yearbook, “The Jug,” as well as sorority histories, member invitations, pledges, guest books, and meeting minutes. The series is arranged by format and then chronologically. Series three is made up of photographs of and by Delta Sigma Kappa. These items are arranged chronologically as possible and topically when not. Most photographs are undated, and the subjects are not identified. Biographical / Historical
The JUG Club, standing for “Justice,” “Unity,” and “Good Fellowship,” secretly organized at Western Maryland College in 1923. At the time, fraternities and sororities were officially banned on campus, though an increasing number of social and local groups had begun to challenge that tradition. On February 14th, 1924 the JUG officially introduced itself to the campus. One year later it took the Greek name, Delta Sigma Kappa, making it the first Greek letter sorority at WMC.
During the 1930s, Delta Sigma Kappa had a clubroom in the basement of McDaniel Hall. They, along with other Greek letter organizations on campus, met Tuesday nights after dinner, a tradition which held until the 1970s.
In 1989, Delta Sigma Kappa affiliated with the national sorority, Phi Mu, and was officially rechartered. The sorority is still currently active on campus.
