Margaretta McCoy grew up on a farm near the mill town of Oakland (now underneath Liberty Reservoir) near Sykesville and attended Oakland Mills School (Carroll County Public School) from 1915-1922 (first through seventh grade). At age thirteen, she boarded with the Melville family in Westminster during the week and came home to Oakland on weekends while she attended Westminster High School.
