Biographical / Historical
The Student Government Association (SGA) of Western Maryland College was founded in 1916. Originally, this association was reserved for the men of Western Maryland College with a supplementary assocation founded for the women of Western Maryland Colege called the Student Government League. The separate associations of Student Government worked concurrently but would facilitate social meetings between the sexes called Parlor Night. These groups of students would police themselves and others and award demerits for undesirable behavior, as approved by faculty. In 1948 the separate student governing bodies united into one Student Government Association.
The men's Student Government Association also established an honor system to address issues of cheating and absences among the student body.Eventually in 1945 a fine system was created to correct the issues.
The Student Government Association of Western Maryland College hosted many events such as May Day and Homecoming Events as well as raising the important issues to the college's administration through biweekly meetings called Senate Meetings. The SGA is a current organization on the campus of McDaniel College, working closely with the President and the Office of Student Engagement. Currently the SGA holds monthly Town Halls where students and organziation leaders are encouraged to attend and raise their concerns.
