Scope and Contents

The Don Swann Prints of Western Maryland College is an artificial collection consisting of copies of a set of etchinings Don Swann created of buildings on campus during the mid-twentieth century. The collection is arranged into two series: unframed and framed pieces. Works are listed alphabetically according to what the building was named when the etching was created. Contemporary names (if relevant) are listed in parantheses in the item title.

Biographical / Historical

Don Swann (1899-1954) was an American printmaker. Born in Fernandina, Fl and raised in Baltimore, Md, Swann attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. His prints often featured examples of colonial and Neo-classical American architecture. Collections of Swann’s work can be found in the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

Custodial History

Except for the prints who have accession numbers, the Don Swann prints in this collection were found in the collection under artifact and memorabilia number 84. McDaniel Hall (A116) 64/300 was donated to the College by Rodalie Kinkead and originally owned by Edith Ault, Class of 1929. Albert Norman Ward Hall (accession #2012.39) 89/300 was donated by Edward Shea, class of 1975, and his wife Theresa B. Shea. Baker Chapel (accession #2014.30)157/300 Administration Building (Carroll Hall) (accession #2014.30) 75/300
