Scope and Contents

This collection includes student handbooks and datebooks from 1913-2010. The handbooks are arranged chronologically, oldest to most recent. Types of information found in the handbooks include: religious life on campus and in Westminster, student organizations, general information about the college, calendar and important dates for academic year, college songs and yells, rules and regulations for the college and freshman “rat” rules. By late 1980s, format of the handbook changes to be a datebook with information about the college sprinkled in. Datebooks from the early 2000s also include general information about succeeding in college, like test taking tips, along with materials for quick reference like maps and measurement conversions.

Collection is missing: 1918-19; 1919-20; 1920-21; 1921-22; 1922-23; 1923-24; 1928-29; 1930-31; 1935-36; 1952-53.

The Office of Student Affairs ceased printing student handbooks in 2010 after which they began appearing in digital form only. Digital copies of handbooks issued since then can be found here.

Biographical / Historical

Western Maryland College student handbooks were originally published jointly by the Young Men’s Christian Association and the Young Women’s Christian Association. By the 1940s, WMC’s student government association and the college were as listed as coproducers along with the school’s religious associations. Near the end of the next decade, the religious organizations stopped appearing as coproducers. The Student Government Association and Office of the Dean of Students continued to produce the handbooks until 1973 when the Office of Student Affairs took over. The Office of Student Affairs ceased printing student handbooks in 2010 after which they began appearing in digital form only.
