Biographical / Historical
The first diversity efforts supported by the college administration were established in the early 1990s and overseen by staff on a part-time basis. The first dedicated position was the Area Coordinator/Coordinator of Minority and International Programs which later became the Senior Admissions Counselor/Coordinator of Multicultural Student Services. The Office of Multicultural Student Services was established at Western Maryland College in 1997 under the division of Academic Affairs. James Felton served as its first full-time director. In 1999, Mary Grace Almandrez stepped into the directorship followed by Zephia Bryant in 2002. In 2008, the office rebranded as the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Mahlia Joyce became the director in 2010. Three years later Jennifer J. Maraña joined the staff as the new director. As part of a college reorganization, OMDA moved to the Division of Student Affairs in 2015. In 2016, the office changed its name again to the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion to reflect a broader effort to engage with students, faculty, and staff. José Moreno took over the position as director that same year. Two years later the office rebranded again as the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and in 2020 it became the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. The department also expanded to include an assistant directorship position. In 2021, Richard M. Smith was appointed to the newly created position of Associate Provost for Equity and Belonging. Martha Smith was named director of ODEI in 2022.
