Biographical / Historical
John Morgan "Nemo" Robinson was a 1943 graduate of Western Maryland College. As a student at WMC, he was highly involved in athletics, lettering in basketball three years and leading the team as a captain his senior year. Robinson also played baseball for two years and was The Baltimore Sun's 1942 All-Maryland second-team shortstop. He was inducted in the the Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
Following his graduation, Robinson graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. He was sent to Europe in late 1944 where he fought during the Battle of the Bulge. Robinson was a lieutenant and belonged to the 78th "Lightning" Infantry Division. He earned three battle stars, the Bronze Star with 'V' for valor and the combat Infrantryman Badge for his service in the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war ended, Robinson taught math and coached at Gilman's Lower School in Baltimore until 1955 and coached the varsity basketball team until 1962. As a coach, he won five Maryland Scholastic Association titles and was Gilman's all-time most-winning basketball coach until 2005.
Robinson left teaching to run a summer resort called Pinehurst-on-the-Bay, which was his father's business. He also rented cottages and ran a beach at Pasadena. Later in life, he sold real estate at Hammond S. Carr & Associates before retiring from O'Conor, Piper & Flynn.
Robinson passed away in 2013 at the age of ninety.
