Biographical / Historical

Music has been a part of Western Maryland College’s history since the school’s founding in 1867. Beginning as supplemental courses, the music department organized the college band and choir, among other music clubs. It expanded in 1910 when the college orchestra was formed. The music department officially became an area of study in 1923. The music department gradually grew out of several buildings, from Smith Hall in Old Main to Alumni Hall and finally to Levine Hall in 1939 where it resides now. Students of the music department were often involved in the band or orchestra, as well as the college choir. Notable choir groups include the Madrigal Singers and the Women’s Glee Club in the earlier years. Music students also gave performances on the college radio as well as regular recitals. Notable professors that gave many years to the music department were Alfred De Long specializing in choir, Maude Gesner specializing in keyboard instruction, Evelyn Hering and Margaret Boudreaux, both specialized in choir and directors of the music department. In 2019, President Casey along with the Board of Trustees made the decision to cut the music major and minor. This decision was controversial and as of now, only a few courses are offered in the music department.
