Biographical / Historical
The Phi Delta Theta Fraternity originated on campus in 1923 as the Black and White Club. The Black and White Club was responsible for producing the school's first student-run newspaper, The Black and White. Editor Sterling Edwards created the fraternity's shield, a quadrant divided into four parts which stood for scholarship, religion, fraternity, and character.
The Black and White Club became Pi Alpha Alpha in 1924 with G. Hall Duncun serving as its first president. John Makosky, future English Professor and Dean of the Faculty, was also a founder.
Pi Alpha Alpha made the decision to become a colony of the national fraternity, Phi Delta Theta in 1971, making it the first nationally affiliated fraternity on campus. The Phi Delts are still currently active at McDaniel College.
