Scope and Contents

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Joan Weyers. It spans the years 1962-1997 with the bulk of the materials created during the 1970s and 1980s. The collection consists mostly of photographs documenting Weyers participation in Special Olympics and the Tournament of Champions as well as her coaching work with the Western Maryland College Women's Tennis and Field Hockey teams. There are also several newspaper clippings pertaining to WMC tennis and field hockey matches along with information about Weyers own amateur tennis career.

Biographical / Historical

Joan Weyers (1938-2024) taught at Western Maryland College from 1968 to 1989. During that time, she served as a coach for the women's tennis, soccer, and field hockey teams. Weyers worked closely with Special Olympics, introducing the Tournament of Champions at WMC, which provided opportunities to intellectually and physically impaired students to participate in adapted athletic events. In addition to her coaching and teaching career, Weyers was a ranked amateur tennis and badminton player in Maryland.
