Biographical or Historical Information

Western Maryland College’s first application to the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa for consideration of a chapter was submitted in 1949. The College was not accepted for further study by the Phi Beta Kappa Committee on Qualifications. Discussions on applying for a chapter arose from time to time in the next twenty years. However no action was taken until the early 1970s when Dr. Cornelius Darcy began the research for the application to Phi Beta Kappa for a chapter. Through Dr. Darcy’s efforts and those of his colleagues, the application was recommended by the Senate of Phi Beta Kappa for favorable consideration. At the Thirty-Second Triennial Council of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa a charter for Western Maryland College was approved. The following year on May 1, 1980, the Delta of Maryland Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was installed at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College).
