Biographical / Historical

Gamma Beta Chi, also known as the “Betes,” was founded in 1922 as a secret fraternity at Western Maryland College. It announced itself to the College two years later in 1924, securing rooms off campus above the Star Movie Theater for hosting social events. After the administration officially recognized Greek Life on campus in the 1930s, Gamma Beta Chi was granted a meeting room in Alumni Hall. In 1937, a second chapter of the fraternity briefly organized at the University of Baltimore; however, the chapter did not last long and the fraternity never gained national status. In 1956, Gamma Beta Chi’s clubroom moved to MacLea Hall. During the 1960s, the fraternity briefly became associated with the national fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, but it did not become a colony. Gamma Beta Chi had its charter suspended in 2005 though it continued underground activities for several years afterwards. As of 2026, the fraternity is not currently active on campus.
