Scope and Contents

This collection consists of papers, photographs, newspaper clippings, and artifacts. Included are Edith De Berry Powell's compositions, correspondence, artifacts and books from her college years which make up the bulk of the material. The collection was transferred to the Archives by the donor in no particular order. It was divided into three sections: genres-papers, books, and artifacts. The essays are ordered by date if they were dated, if they were undated they are ordered alphabetically. Other papers are by date. Books are done alphabetically. Yearbooks for 1899 and 1902 have been removed from the collection and placed with the yearbook collection.

Biographical or Historical Information

Edith Almedia De Berry Powell  was born on September 27, 1878 near Oakland, MD to Mr. And Mrs. Clark De Berry. She graduated from Western Maryland College in 1902. In 1907, she took a position teaching foreign languages and mathematics at West Lafayette College, Ohio where she met and married Homer K. Powell in 1909. When West Lafayette College merged with Adrian College they moved to Michigan to teach at Adrian. Edith and Homer had four children, Eugene, Carroll, Margaret, and Eleanor. After her second child was born Edith gave up her teaching career though she did substitute in the foreign language department of Adrian occasionally. During World War II Edith took a job helping to publish the Michigan Christian Advocate where she worked until her retirement at age 82. She died in 1966 age 87.
